SEBEI Culture

At Home of Friends give special attention to the Sebei culture. Sebei is the name of the mountainous region on the Ugandan side of Mount Elgon. It is comprised of the districts of Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo. A region rich in nature and culture. The people inhabiting this region are called the Sabiny and their language is called ‘Kupsapiiny’.

Sadly enough, Sebei is mostly known for a cultural practice with a negative connotation: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Its good to know that the number of girls that undergo FGM is rapidly declining, due to efforts of dedicated leaders, development partners and of course the people themselves. Circumcision of boys is still taking place, in the December month of even years (2020, 2022, 2024 et cetera) and as long as a famous tree on Mount Elgon is not blossoming!

We are proud of positive Sebei cultural practices such as dancing, prophesizing, storytelling, name giving, dressing and cooking. We believe we can all learn a lot from these ancient practices. That's why we engage our guests in the Cave Experience and campfire storytelling. And during Easter 2019 we organized a special cultural act at our compound:
