The Home of Friends Community Tourism Hub

Learning from practice in Kapchorwa

Home of Friends has grown into a living space where Community-rooted tourism is not only hosted — but continuously developed, tested and improved in practice.

This happens together with local guides, farmers, athletes, storytellers and travellers who spend time in Kapchorwa’s highlands.

What started as a guesthouse has gradually become something more:

👉 A place where Community tourism is practiced, learned and shared.

This page is especially relevant for tourism partners, program designers and curious professionals who want to understand how this works in real life.

A Living and Imperfect Community of Practice

Home of Friends was never designed as a perfect model.

It grows through daily work:

  • welcoming guests

  • training guides

  • developing tours

  • refining stories

  • adjusting prices

  • listening to feedback

  • learning from mistakes

This ongoing process makes it a living system.

We experiment, learn and adapt together.

Learning by doing

Learning happens through real experience.

Local practitioners grow by:

  • guiding real visitors

  • sharing their own stories

  • testing new ideas

  • receiving feedback

  • supporting one another

Over time, this builds:

  • storytelling skills

  • hospitality and hosting

  • environmental awareness

  • leadership and teamwork

  • entrepreneurial thinking

These capabilities strengthen the wider Community.

A place of inspiration for tourism partners

Because Home of Friends operates as a real ecosystem, it attracts partners interested in meaningful tourism.

Some visit Kapchorwa to observe and learn.

Others collaborate on:

  • guide training e.g. first aid, storytelling and

  • Community experience design

  • team capacity building

All exchanges are grounded in daily reality, not theory.

Shared learning with guides and facilitators

The hub is not driven by one person.

It grows through collaboration with guides and practitioners such as:

  • Shadrack

  • Becky

  • Charlotte

They contribute insights from their daily work, help refine experiences and support learning processes.

This ensures the hub reflects the voices of the Community itself.

From Kapchorwa to wider conversations

While rooted in Mount Elgon, the ideas developed here often resonate beyond the region.

Visitors and partners leave with new perspectives on what tourism can look like when it grows from Community strengths.

These conversations continue through:

  • collaborations

  • storytelling

  • exchanges
