Community-Rooted Tourism in Kapchorwa

Travel that strengthens local life

Kapchorwa, in the highlands of Mount Elgon, is known as Uganda’s Land of Champions. World-class runners train on the red dirt roads, while small farms and family gatherings are the cornerstones of everyday life in the mountains.

Too often, tourism replaces local life instead of strengthening it.
In Kapchorwa, we are working to do the opposite.

At Home of Friends, tourism is built around the strengths that already exist: resilient people, proud culture and indigenous knowledge.

Over the years, our Guesthouse has grown into a place where travellers, guides, cooks, farmers, athletes and storytellers meet — and learn from one another.

Together, we have developed a simple approach:

👉 Tourism that works for the people who make the experiences possible.

Our Community Impact Model

To keep tourism fair, transparent and meaningful, we work with a simple structure across many of our Community experiences.

70% – Direct income for local practitioners

The largest share of revenue goes directly to the people leading the experience: guides, cooks, performers, athletes and host families.

This income supports:

  • school fees

  • farming activities

  • financial independence for women and youth

20% – Community Impact Fund

A portion of revenue is reinvested into shared priorities in the region, such as:

  • bamboo and indigenous tree planting on Mount Elgon

  • water infrastructure and well maintenance

  • guide training and exposure visits

These initiatives strengthen the long-term resilience of the Community.

10% – Coordination and continuity

Community tourism requires organisation behind the scenes.

This portion supports:

  • coordination of experiences

  • guide training and mentoring

  • maintaining quality and consistency

Our goal is not to maximise volume, but to ensure tourism creates real value.

Community Experiences in Practice

The model comes to life through experiences developed together with local practitioners.

Cooking with the Kapchorwa Mamas

Visitors join a group of women to prepare a traditional champion’s meal — harvesting matoke and cooking together over the fire.

Impact:

  • strengthens indigenous food traditions

  • supports women’s income and independence

  • builds confidence in storytelling and hospitality

Kapchorwa Nature Walk

Native guides introduce guests to the landscapes of Mount Elgon, sharing stories about farming, biodiversity and running culture.

Impact:

  • creates sustainable livelihoods for guides

  • builds environmental awareness

  • connects visitors to daily life in Kapchorwa

The Mosopisiek Trail

A multi-day hiking experience connecting visitors with remote mountain communities, basket weavers and elder storytellers.

Impact:

  • generates income in remote villages

  • preserves traditional crafts and knowledge

  • strengthens cultural pride

Voices from the Highlands

Behind every experience are people who know the land, culture and stories of Mount Elgon.

Many of our guides grew up in the villages surrounding Kapchorwa and share their knowledge with pride.

Shadrack – Hiking guide & (cultural) storyteller

"When visitors walk with us in the hills, they see more than the landscape. They hear the stories of our people, our farming culture and our traditions."

Becky – Community guide & (coffee) storyteller

"Tourism gives me confidence. When I explain how coffee grows or how our community lives here, I feel proud to represent my home."

Elijah – Junior running guide & upcoming athlete

"Our elders taught us the stories of the mountains. By sharing them with visitors, we make sure they continue."

Skills, Confidence and Opportunity

Community tourism is not only about income.

Through real experiences, local practitioners learn to:

  • confidently guide international visitors

  • share personal and cultural stories with clarity

  • host guests in their homes and communities

  • work together as a team

  • develop small entrepreneurial initiatives

These skills continue to grow beyond tourism itself.

Impact in Numbers

A growing ecosystem, built step by step:

  • 30+ local practitioners actively earning income

  • 10 Community-rooted experiences co-created

  • 70% of revenue paid directly to practitioners

  • 20% reinvested into community initiatives

From Practice to Shared Learning

Over time, Home of Friends has grown into more than a guesthouse.

It has become a place where community tourism is continuously tested, improved and shared.
