Yes. All main access routes from Kampala, Mbale, Jinja and the Kenyan border at Suam are fully tarmacked. The mountain climb after Muyembe is paved as well, making Kapchorwa much easier to reach than many visitors expect.

Yes. An ordinary sedan or 2WD rental car is suitable for travelling to Kapchorwa via the main roads in normal weather conditions. If you plan to explore more remote areas or drive during the rainy season, an SUV or 4WD offers additional comfort.

Yes. The roads are generally safe and in good condition. We recommend travelling during daylight, especially if it is your first visit, and avoiding unnecessary speeding on the mountain sections where there are many bends.

We recommend staying at least 3-4 nights. This gives you enough time to visit Sipi Falls, experience the surrounding villages, enjoy one or two hikes and experience the relaxed atmosphere of Uganda's running capital without rushing.

Absolutely. Many visitors combine Kapchorwa with Jinja, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, Moroto, Mount Elgon National Park, Sipi Falls or even western Kenya via the Suam border crossing.

Kapchorwa can be visited throughout the year. Thanks to its altitude of around 2000 metres, temperatures remain pleasantly cool compared with much of Uganda. The driest months (usually between November and March) generally offer the best hiking conditions, while the rainy seasons bring particularly lush green landscapes.

Fuel stations are available in Mbale and Kapchorwa Town. If you plan to continue into more remote areas after your stay, we recommend filling up before leaving town.
