Mount Elgon Itinerary: 3, 5 and 7 Days in Kapchorwa & Sipi Falls

Mount Elgon blog writer and travel advisor Daan. Uganda, East Africa.

Planning a trip to Mount Elgon — but not sure how to structure your days?

You’re not alone.

Many travelers visit Sipi Falls for one night and move on. But those who stay longer quickly discover that the region around Kapchorwa offers far more than waterfalls alone.

Since 2017, Eliza and I have been based here in the highlands. Over the years we’ve helped many guests shape their time — from short visits to week-long stays.

Below you’ll find three realistic itineraries:

3 days – a strong introduction
5 days – the ideal balance
7 days – a deeper, more meaningful experience

3-Day Mount Elgon Itinerary

A strong introduction

This is the minimum stay we recommend if you want to move beyond just Sipi Falls.

Day 1 — Arrival & Sipi Falls

Arrive via Mbale and drive up the winding road toward Sipi.

As you climb, the temperature drops and the views open up across the Karamoja plains.

Afternoon options:

• hike to the main Sipi waterfall
• visit the second waterfall for a swim
• enjoy sunset views from your lodge

If you still have energy, a short coffee tour gives a great introduction to local life.

Day 2 — Kapchorwa Highlands & Culture

Head toward Kapchorwa town and explore beyond the waterfalls.

Options include:

Kapchorwa Nature Walk
• visit hidden waterfalls near town
Cooking with the Kapchorwa Mamas

This is where most visitors realise the region has much more depth than expected.

Day 3 — Hiking or Running Experience

Choose your final activity based on energy:

guided trail run with local athletes
• a half-day hike into the hills
• relaxed morning + departure

✔ Best for:

5-Day Mount Elgon Itinerary

The ideal balance

Five days is where Mount Elgon really starts to open up.

You combine nature, culture and deeper exploration.

Day 1 — Arrival via Sipi Falls

Same as Day 1 in the 3-day itinerary.

Take your time — no need to rush.

Day 2 — Kapchorwa-Benet Trail (Full Day)

One of the most rewarding hikes in the region.

You walk through:

• large farmlands
• escarpment views
• remote villages

The trail offers a real sense of space and daily life on Mount Elgon.

Day 3 — Cultural Experience & Cave Visit

A slower day focused on connection.

Options:

Cave Experience with Sebei Cultural Storytellers
• village walk
• bamboo weaving experience

These moments often become the most memorable.

Day 4 — Adventure or Wildlife

Choose between:

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve day trip
mountain biking through villages
• waterfall exploration

Pian Upe offers a completely different landscape. Wide, open and quiet.

Day 5 — Recovery & Departure

Take time to slow down:

• garden relaxation
• short walk
relaxation massage

Then depart.

Short walk + sunset.

Day 4-5 — Mosopisiek Trail (Overnight)

A true highlight.

Spend one or two days in the Benet highlands:

This is where visitors often feel the strongest connection to the region.
