Kapchorwa, Sipi Falls & Kween Highlands
Mount Elgon is often associated with multi-day summit treks inside the national park.
But what many travelers don’t realise is that some of the most rewarding hikes happen outside the park boundaries.
Here, on the slopes of Mount Elgon, you walk through:
• small farming villages
• coffee and banana plantations
• escarpment viewpoints
• hidden waterfalls
• living cultural landscapes
Since 2017, we’ve been exploring, mapping and guiding these routes together our team of native guides from Kapchorwa and Kween.
This guide brings together the best hikes outside Mount Elgon National Park. From short walks to multi-day adventures.
Why Hike Outside the National Park?
Hiking outside the park offers a very different experience.
Instead of ranger posts and fixed camps, you’ll find:
• more flexibility in routes
• direct interaction with local communities
• a mix of nature and daily life
• fewer restrictions and lower costs
For many visitors, these hikes feel more personal and immersive.
If you're still deciding between park trekking and local hikes, see our Complete Guide to Mount Elgon National Park.

Most of the hikes in this guide are marked here.
1. Mosopisiek Trail (2-3 Days)
Culture, caves and highland life
The Mosopisiek Trail is one of the most unique hikes in Uganda.
This multi-day journey takes you deep into the Benet highlands of Kween, where the Mosopisiek community lives.
Expect:
• remote villages
• cave exploration
• waterfalls
• bamboo forests
• homestay experiences
What makes this trail special is not just the landscape, but the people.
The Mosopisiek are a minority community with a strong cultural identity and a deep connection to the mountain. Many of Uganda’s top long-distance runners have roots here.
This hike combines nature, culture and storytelling in a way few places still offer.

2. Kapchorwa-Benet Trail (Full Day)
The most rewarding day hike
If you’re looking for one full-day hike that captures the essence of Mount Elgon’s northern slopes, this is it.
The Kapchorwa–Benet Trail takes you through:
• fertile farmlands
• scattered villages
• rocky ridges
• wide escarpment views
As you move higher, the landscape opens up and the rhythm of rural life becomes more visible.
It’s a physically active day (around 7–8 hours), but very rewarding.

• hidden viewpoints
• remote farming areas

Yes, it’s the most well-known hike in the region.
And yes, it can be busy.
But the Sipi Falls hike remains one of the most scenic short hikes on Mount Elgon.
You’ll walk:
• between three waterfalls
• through coffee farms
• along steep escarpment paths
• with panoramic valley views
If it’s your first time in the region, it’s still a must-do.

It’s shorter and less commercial, making it ideal for travelers who prefer a calmer experience.
