Kapchorwa-Benet Trail
Mount Elgon’s ultimate one-day mountain hike
Walk from Kapchorwa’s highland ridges into the fertile valleys of Benet.
Through waterfalls, rock formations and endless green slopes.

The Kapchorwa-Benet Trail is a 22-kilometre mountain crossing with 1,400 meters of elevation gain.
A full-day adventure through one of Uganda’s most dramatic and least-travelled landscapes.

You finish at Mengia waterfall in Benet.

What Makes This Trail Special?
This trail tells the story of Kapchorwa’s highlands in one day.
You move from cool highland air to warmer valley farms.
From volcanic rock formations to onion and cabbage fields.
From roaring waterfalls to quiet mountain villages.
It’s physical.
It’s scenic.
It’s refreshing.
And it rewards those who are willing to go a little further.
Trail Highlights
1. Hidden waterfalls & Shauriako rock
Pass Chepchebai and Kaptokwoi waterfalls. Powerful streams cutting through ancient rock (especially impressive outside dry season).
Just before the descent lies Shauriako Rock.
In Kiswahili it means “it’s up to you.”
A fitting name. Because from here, you choose how strong your legs still feel.
2. Scenic viewpoints & farming highlands
Climb through farms of cabbage, onion and potato.
Mount Elgon is known as Uganda’s “food basket” for a reason.
At Cheptui and Kamakunga viewpoints, the landscape opens wide:
Kapchorwa town behind you.
Benet valley below you.
The plains stretching far into the distance.
A silence and view that feels earned.

3. Cultural landscape of champions
This region is home to the Benet people - also known as Mosopisiek or Ndorobos - ancestors of world-class runners like:
Jacob Kiplimo
Stephen Kiprotich
Joshua Cheptegei
These hills build strong legs and resilient minds.
Along the way, you’ll meet farmers, children and elders whose lives are connected to this terrain. Mountain hospitality here is simple, proud and grounded.

💬 What guests say
“If the steep, curling slope to Kapchorwa didn’t take your breath away, Home of Friends will for sure. The venue is beautifully located on a mountain ridge and guarantees a true moment of ease after a long hike through the stunning countryside. We highly recommend the rough but rewarding Kapchorwa-Benet Trail in that matter. Huge thumbs up to Eliza for the warm welcome and endless smiles:)”
