Trail Highlights
1. Hidden waterfalls & rock formations
Hike past Chepchebai and Kaptokwoi waterfalls, where powerful streams (unless it’s dry season😉) cut through ancient rock. Stop to cool off or simply enjoy the calm. Just before these remote waterfalls lies the striking Shauriako Rock. Its name in Kiswahili means “it’s up to you,” a playful nod to the climb and descend that await.
2. Scenic viewpoints & mountain villages
Climb through farms of cabbage, onion and potato. Mount Elgon is often called ‘the food basket’ of Uganda. The viewpoints at Cheptui and Kamakunga open up breathtaking 360° vistas of Kapchorwa, Benet (Kween District) and the distant plains.
3. Cultural connections
This region is home to the Benet people (also known as the Mosopisiek or Ndorobos), ancestors of Uganda’s world-class runners like Jacob Kiplimo, Stephen Kiprotich and Joshua Cheptegei. Along the way, meet local farmers and experience mountain hospitality rooted in resilience and pride.
