Sipi Falls is Uganda's most famous waterfall destination. Yet it is also one of its most misunderstood.
Most visitors come for the three waterfalls, but those who stay a little longer discover something even more rewarding: coffee farms, village life, quiet hiking trails and sweeping views across the Karamoja plains from the foothills of Mount Elgon.
Whether you're planning a day trip or a longer stay, this guide will help you make the most of your visit.

What makes Sipi Falls special?
In Sipi, three dramatic waterfalls meet coffee farms, mountain villages, steep escarpments and panoramic views across the Karamoja plains. Many travellers arrive for the waterfalls but leave remembering the people, landscapes and slower rhythm of life.
Sipi is also an ideal gateway to exploring the wider Mount Elgon region.
Where is Sipi Falls?
Sipi Falls is located in Kapchorwa District, on the northern slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda.
55 km from Mbale
274 km from Kampala
90 km from the Kenyan border (Suam)
Altitude: +/- 1,800m above sea level
Sipi is only 25 minutes (tarmac road) from Kapchorwa Town - Uganda’s “Land of Champions”.
That proximity matters. Because where you base yourself affects your entire experience.
What to Expect at Sipi Falls
Sipi consists of three major waterfalls (plus two lesser-known ones).
1️⃣ The main waterfall
Approximately 95–100 meters high (sources vary slightly).
Visible from the escarpment lodges and used for abseiling.
2️⃣ Simba waterfall
74 meters high.
Includes a cave behind the waterfall — refreshing and photogenic.
3️⃣ Ngasire waterfall
Around 85 meters high.
Reached during the classic 3-4 hour hike.
There are also two lesser-visited waterfalls that can be explored on a separate 3-hour trail.
During rainy seasons, dozens of seasonal waterfalls appear across the escarpment.

Common Mistakes Visitors Make at Sipi Falls
Most visitors enjoy Sipi Falls, but a little planning can make the difference between a rushed stop and one of the highlights of your Uganda trip.
Here are the mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.
⏱️ 1. Only allowing two hours
Many visitors arrive expecting to see a waterfall, take a few photos and continue their journey.
In reality, Sipi Falls is best experienced at a slower pace. The waterfalls are only part of what makes this area special. Coffee farms, village life, scenic viewpoints and guided walks all deserve time.
Our advice: At least stay one or two nights to explore the wider Mount Elgon region.
🥾 2. Skipping a local guide
The trails may look straightforward, but local guides know the safest routes, the best viewpoints and the stories behind the landscape.
They also help support the local tourism economy.
Our advice: Join an experienced local guide, especially if you plan to visit all three waterfalls.
💦 3. Only visiting the main waterfall
Many travellers stop at the first waterfall, take a few photos and leave.
The complete Sipi Falls hike takes you to all three waterfalls, each with its own scenery, viewpoints and atmosphere. For many visitors, the quieter upper sections are the real highlight.
Our advice: If your fitness allows, walk the complete trail.
🌿 4. Skipping Kapchorwa
Sipi Falls is spectacular, but it is only one part of the Mount Elgon experience.
Just 25 minutes uphill, Kapchorwa offers nature walks, running culture, cultural experiences, hidden waterfalls and a wider choice of hiking trails.
Many visitors who stay in Kapchorwa enjoy combining these experiences with a day at Sipi Falls.
👟 5. Wearing the wrong shoes
The trails include rocky sections, uneven paths and can become slippery after rain.
Flip-flops and smooth-soled shoes quickly become uncomfortable. and sometimes unsafe.
Our advice: Wear comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots with good grip.
🌦️ 6. Ignoring the weather
Mountain weather changes quickly.
A bright morning can turn into afternoon rain, especially during the wetter seasons.
Our advice: Start your hike early and carry a lightweight rain jacket, even if the forecast looks good.
🌅 7. Starting too late
Many visitors only arrive at Sipi Falls in the middle of the afternoon.
Besides the warmer temperatures, you'll also have less time to enjoy the trails and viewpoints before daylight fades.
Our advice: Start your visit in the morning. The temperatures are cooler, the light is softer for photography and the trails are generally quieter.
Did you know? 💡
During the rainy season, dozens of temporary waterfalls appear along the escarpment, making every visit slightly different.
